António Ecari, the Venezuelan presidential opposition candidate, asked this Thursday the head of state, Nicolás Maduro, to present the results of his government, in power since 2013, ahead of the July 28 elections in which the Chavez leader will seek a third term.
“Insert the results of your government and see if we all accept it,” Ekari said at a press conference, reiterating his proposal to hold a debate among the 10 presidential candidates.
Anti-Chavezists – critics of the main opposition coalition, the Democratic Unity Platform (PUD) – argue the president should show results such as the electricity service, which has deteriorated over the past decade.
Ekari said he agreed to sign Maduro’s proposal for an early recognition of the election results, as long as it was held before the presidential debate.
«How about we first acknowledge this debate? “I hope they (the candidates) acknowledge the election results and the debate so that we recognize these arguments to each other, because democracy is built every day and not when you (Chavismo) want it,” he said.
He argued that the debate would avoid “blind voting” and allow the 21.6 million Venezuelans who go to the polls to make a decision based on “arguments, plans, programs and ideas.”
“The running cock does not want to participate in the debate,” Ekari added, alluding to Maduro.
