Egypt’s president says will protect Somalia from ANZ threat

Waagacusub.net – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said Egypt will protect Somalia from any threats, which can be said to be an indirect response to Ethiopia’s recent move to enter Somaliland seaports.

Sisi held talks with Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Cairo on Sunday.

At a news conference after the meeting, Sisi rejected a deal signed earlier this month between Ethiopia and the breakaway region of Somaliland that would have allowed landlocked Ethiopia access to its coast.

He also stressed Egypt’s willingness to support Somalia in defending its land sovereignty.

“We will not allow anyone to threaten Somalia or to get close to Somalia. I said very clearly, do not test Egypt and try to threaten its brothers, especially if our brothers ask us to fight alongside them,” Sisi said.

Somaliland is strategically located on the Gulf of Aden. In 1991, Somalia broke away from Somalia and became an independent country due to warlords’ infighting.

The region retains its own government despite a lack of international recognition.

The Somali president also met with Arab League Chairman Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Saturday, who said Somalia would not reach any agreement on the Red Sea issue without his consent.

“Somalia is privileged to have huge geopolitical interests in the Red Sea and we will not allow other countries to occupy even an inch of this territory without the consent of the sovereign state of Somalia,” he said.
