Educators strive to incorporate the 6Cs into initial teacher education programs

In order to integrate the 6C concept into teaching, a workshop on integrating the 6C concept into teacher training in Solomon Islands was held for educators at the Mendana Kitano Hotel on July 24, 2024. The workshop will last for five days.

The workshop, chaired by Professor Esther Care of the University of Melbourne and organised by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD), Solomon Islands National University (SINU) and UNESCO, aims to provide the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively incorporate the 6Cs into teacher training in the country.

The 6Cs are: (1) critical thinking, (2) collaboration, (3) communication, (4) creativity, (5) character, and (6) citizenship.

Speaking at the opening of the seminar, Permanent Secretary Dr. Franco Rody said the ministry’s focus on developing critical thinking skills, collaborative practice skills, clear communication skills, developing creativity skills, strengthening character skills and developing good citizenship has undergone significant changes.

He recognized that while his department had made great progress in moving away from broad terms such as “knowledge, skills, values” toward specific competencies, there was still a need for detailed definitions and descriptions of those skills.

He said that based on global research showing that these competencies can mean different things to different people, even within the same culture, the workshops were designed to meet those needs.

Dr Rody also highlighted the efforts of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development to meet these needs, guided by the Education Strategic Framework 2016-2030, the Learner Assessment Policy, the National Curriculum Statement 2012, the Learning Framework 2024 and the Education Act 2023.

Despite these efforts, he said, gaps still exist in our teacher policy and standards documents. For example, the overall educator professional development framework (MEHRD, 2023) outlines a philosophy of teaching and education that is compatible with transversal competencies, but lacks specific details on how to integrate these skills into teaching practice. The workshop targeted education lecturers from the Solomon Islands National University’s School of Education and Humanities and MEHRD officers from the Curriculum Development and Teacher Professional Development Division.

The importance of 6C education and the purpose of educational institutions to train student teachers to teach 6C education to students in primary and secondary schools was highlighted. It is recognized that a lot of efforts are needed to make young people creative, analytical, problem-solving and adaptable to changes. Dr. Rodie reiterated that teachers in the country need to develop new skills in the classroom – 6C education skills.

He said the workshop will provide lecturers from the Faculty of Education and Humanities with practical examples and methods to incorporate the concept of 6C into teaching, thereby transforming our education system and equipping our students with the skills they need for future success.
