Caracas – Edmundo González Urrutia, the standard-bearer of Venezuela’s majority opposition, said on Sunday that the summons by the Public Ministry (councillors, prosecutor’s office) to appear in court on Monday as part of an investigation into alleged “collusion” and other crimes lacked “guarantees of independence and due process.”
In a video posted on social networks, the leader of the main opposition alliance, the Democratic Unity Platform (PUD), said the MP “intends to give interviews, without specifying in what state he expects to appear, and the pre-qualification offences are not committed”, although he did not confirm his attendance.
According to the summons, he must appear in court at 10:00 local time (14:00 GMT) this Monday as part of an investigation into “alleged crimes of usurpation of power, forgery of official documents, incitement to commit crimes, computer crimes, criminal association and conspiracy.”
González Urrutia, who claims to have won the presidential elections of July 28, despite the declaration of victory by President Nicolás Maduro by the National Electoral Council (CNE), said in a video that Attorney General Tarek William Saab “has repeatedly behaved poorly, like a political accuser” because – he asserts – “he denounced beforehand and now issues subpoenas without guarantees of independence and due process. ”
In his speech, the former ambassador urged Maduro to “understand that this time the solution is not repression, but international, independent and credible verification of the proceedings, which cannot be replaced by an extra-constitutional judgment”., referring to the Supreme Court (TSJ) ruling that confirmed the validity of the Chavista re-election.
“In this context, we will submit a copy of the minutes of the review meeting, making clear the will of Venezuelans for change. The truth about what happened on July 28 will save democracy,” he said.
Opponents demanded that the authorities publish the minutes for the sake of “peace and well-being of the country” and respect “the popular will expressed in the July 28 elections, which largely supported the political change represented by his candidacy.”
Moreover, he reiterated that his opposition advocates “the search for a formula strictly subject to popular sovereignty, in order to achieve an orderly and peaceful transition and provide guarantees for all.”
“Venezuela is experiencing hours of uncertainty and unrest as a result of your actions against the will for change,” he added in the video.
The prosecutor’s office is investigating a website the opposition coalition claims has published “83.5 percent of the minutes” from the presidential election, which, according to anti-Chavez figures, show a victory for González Urrutia. Efei
