Any possible constitutional review or amendment is a way for Fiji to perfect our young democracy. This was the view expressed by Independent MP Viliame Naupoto yesterday, who in a statement outlined why he supported a review of the 2013 Constitution.
He said the process was “not targeted at any person or any party.” “The work of perfecting our democracy is never-ending; those who come after us will continue the work,” he said.
He said the apparent link of the Constitution to a political party must be removed when the document is reviewed. This was the headline on the front page of the Fiji Times on Saturday 10 August.

summary
Today, the much-anticipated Deans Cup rugby tournament quarter-finals kicked off in Suva.
This weekend’s competition culminated in a directive issued by Education Minister Aseri Radrodro affecting the under-17 level.
It raises expectations and can also affect preparation.
This week, there was uncertainty and confusion as the directive for Bukalevu Secondary School to become part of the hostel was issued.
They beat Nabua Secondary School but violated registration rules, which effectively disqualified them from participating this weekend.
Apparently, a teenage player made the step up to the U17 level against Nabua.
So in the subsequent exchange of opinions this week, both sides were affected, leading to today’s very important conflict!
We expect those in power to take these challenges into account and make decisions that benefit the sport, taking into account the impact it will have on our young rugby players.
Laws govern the way we live. They exist for everything from the rules of the road to the laws governing sporting events. Laws are meant to make clear what we can and cannot do. Laws are meant to provide order to our lives, ensure regulations are in place, protect and defend people’s rights, and assist in conflict resolution. Laws are meant to take into account people’s rights and improve people’s quality of life.
Then there are obviously some related issues that will no doubt be considered in this case and will have to be considered in the future. We can discuss geography, numbers, and appropriate rosters for different tiers. We will have to consider all of these factors when developing rules in the future. We live and learn! As circumstances change and as competition and participation grows, we will make adjustments and modifications!
There are also emotional factors involved, and the impact of the violation needs to be considered.
Therefore, we hope that some lessons can be learned this week to ensure that schools and those responsible for promoting rugby in high schools can move forward effectively and confidently to promote the advancement and development of high school rugby.
That being said, a lot of attention today will be on the top U18 level matches, when Nasinu Secondary School will take on Tailevu North College; Ratu Kadavulevu School will take on the strong Kuvu College; Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School will take on Ratu Navula College from Nadi; and Queen Victoria School will take on Marist Brothers High School.
We are currently in the knockout stage of the competition.
At this point, the contestants will go all out to compete for a place in the semi-finals.
They will be playing in the biggest game of their lives, but they know that today’s defeat effectively ends their hopes and ambitions for the season.
Our young female rugby players put in some great performances yesterday in Suva, raising the profile of women’s rugby.
This schools competition is the foundation of our national team. It is a great platform for developing young talent. It all starts here and the players are prepared for the global stage! We wish all the teams the best and look forward to a great match today at the National Stadium in Suva.
