The Association of Chief Journalists has condemned the government’s plan to end funding to the Public Speaking Council (JSN) as ill-considered. The issue of cancelling the €135,000 state aid received by the JSN has arisen during the Ministry of Justice’s preparations.
“The message of partial state funding is that fact-based communication is a guarantee of democracy. Self-regulation is more credible and effective when the state is involved through funding,” the editors’ statement said.

The association describes JSN as a respected institution in the media whose solutions are taken seriously in editorials. Decisions taken against journalists’ instructions are a big setback for the editorial office, as well as a place to learn. Because of this, JSN successfully guides solutions developed in daily deliveries, ensuring a high level of information communication that is truthful and ethical.
“JSN is important not only for the media but also for the public. Anyone can comment on the solutions for the media working on JSN. It increases the protection of media consumers while strengthening the credibility of the media”, said the editor-in-chief.
The association said that ending funding as a cost-saving measure is not good. It will increase court proceedings for media disputes, thereby bringing more costs to the state. In addition, JSN has security political significance in modern times.
“The Government’s Foreign and Security Policy Report states the following. ‘It is important to focus on supporting citizens’ media literacy and capacity as well as psychological crisis resilience, identifying and combating information influence as part of basic education, and the production of reliable and up-to-date information by the media..’Ending support for the Public Word Council would seriously conflict with this goal,” the Association of Chief Journalists argued.
“Based on the above, we believe that continued state involvement in the funding of JSN is justified, although the media industry itself still bears the primary responsibility.”
