August 25, 2024. – The Huaorani people and several non-governmental organizations call for a moratorium on oil extraction in the emblematic region of the Ecuadorian Amazon to implement the positive results of the referendum held in August 2023.
The Ecuadorian government said it would respect public opinion, but the affected indigenous people expressed doubts about the government’s intentions.
“All of Ecuador has said that it no longer wants oil extraction in Block 43,” Zenaida Yasacama, vice president of the Confederation of Indigenous Peoples of Ecuador (CONAIE), said at a demonstration in Quito.
A year ago, 59 percent of Ecuadorian voters voted in favor of ending oil drilling in the eastern part of Yasuni National Park, which is home to several indigenous communities, some of which live in voluntary isolation.
The negotiations resulted in a phase-out of oil production within a year. However, the government continues to pump more than 50,000 barrels of oil per day.
“We are here to demand that the vote in Yasuni be respected,” demanded Zenaida Yasacama, who chanted “Long live Yasuni” during a peaceful rally of about 50 indigenous peoples and environmentalists in front of the Ministry of Energy in Quito.
