The 25th anniversary of the Popular Consultation, held on 30 August 1999, will be celebrated throughout the country with the participation of Government members from every national executive position. This historic date marks a fundamental turning point in the history of Timor-Leste and a series of events will be held from 28 to 30 August 2024 involving the active participation of national and international leaders and the population.
With the theme “The people fought! The people suffered! The people won the battle! The people are the great heroes of independence!!!”, this year’s celebrations highlighted the key role of the Timorese people in achieving independence.
In Dili, the main celebrations will take place at the Dili Municipal Stadium, and will also include a formal meeting at the National Assembly, an exhibition at the Timorese Resistance Archive and Museum, and an official dinner at the Rahane Palace. The event will be attended by a number of international figures, including current and former heads of state and government, as well as other government officials and dignitaries, including the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The celebrations will include a series of events such as concerts, parades, cultural displays and official speeches to celebrate the resilience and triumph of the Timorese people.
The Government of Timor-Leste invites all citizens to actively participate in these celebrations, which embody the spirit of resistance, sacrifice and victory of the Timorese people.
