A donation of €40,200 secured the right to carry the statue of the Virgin Mary from Mġarr during the upcoming festival.
The annual bidding war is a long-standing tradition in Mgar village, held every year outside the church in the center of the village and attracting hundreds of spectators.
The tradition began in 1923, a year after the village received the statue, when the parish received numerous requests to carry the statue in the procession. To solve this problem, they decided that the group with the highest donations would have the honor of carrying the statue. Only residents of Mgarr were eligible to participate.
Last year, 15,000 euros were donated to support the statue. The highest amount ever donated was 46,000 euros, which was reached in 2022, the 100th anniversary of the statue’s inauguration.
