The Dutch men’s 3×3 basketball team made history on Monday night by defeating France 18-17 in the final moments of the game to win the Olympic gold medal.

Worthy de Jong won the game with a two-pointer after the final whistle after first tying the score at 16-16 and sending the game into overtime.

Earlier on Monday, defending champion Sifan Hassan won bronze in the 5,000 meters after Kenya’s Faith Kipiyegun’s disqualification was overturned. Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet won gold.

Kipyegon and Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia led early in the race but recovered and Hassan fell back to bronze medal position.

Hassan will compete in the 10,000m on Friday and the marathon on Sunday, the final day of the Olympics.

It had become clear early in the day that Marit Bouwmeester was already set to win the gold medal in the ILCA 6 sailing event, as she had built up such a big lead that she could not be surpassed in the medal race on Tuesday.

The only sailor with a chance of catching the 36-year-old Dutchwoman is Denmark’s Anne-Marie Rindom, who won her first title in Rio in 2016.

In field hockey, the Dutch women’s team, the defending Olympic champions and favorites to win, beat Great Britain 3-1 in the quarterfinals and will face Argentina in the semifinals later this week.
