After the first competition of the Olympic combined climbing competition in Le Bourget, the two French athletes entered Sam Avesou (4Egypt) and Paul Janft (9Egypt) are still in contention to qualify for Friday’s final.
The youngest of the Allezou siblings, 23, finished fourth in the bouldering competition with 49.2 points, behind two Japanese competitors, Sorato Anraku (69 points) and Tomoa Narasaki (54.4 points), and Britain’s Toby Roberts (54, 1 point).
He was one of the few climbers at the time to complete one of the four problems posed by the opener, the last one, and only on his third attempt.
“The French public really loved it, which is fantastic,” said the ES Massy licensee, who was pleased with his provisional ranking at the end of a very tough first day of competition.
“The block after that was really hard, so it was hard to get a good feel for it. I was really happy that I was able to pull off that block in the last second because my results before that weren’t great in terms of scoring,” he explained.
Paul Jenft from Isère was slightly less impressive on the walls of Le Bourget (34.1 points), but anything is possible ahead of Wednesday’s tough test that will send the top eight in the general classification to the final.
“Physically it wasn’t the best, but the public really supported me. Usually the blocks are a little bit harder than this. Afterwards, it’s the same for everyone. I will recover tomorrow and give my best for the next round,” explained the 21-year-old Jenft.
