On the night of June 25-26, a Dash-8 patrol aircraft of the Caribbean Coast Guard spotted the drug trafficking ship in the Caribbean Sea. The Zr. MS Groningen was already nearby at the time. The ship immediately took action.
Following a pursuit, the suspect and the seized cocaine were turned over to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Helicopter assistance
During the operation, the Zr.Ms. Groningen was assisted by a US Coast Guard helicopter and 2 fast FRISC interceptor vessels stationed on board. These vessels had on board a squadron of Dutch Marines and employees of the US Coast Guard.
This is the sixth new drug seizure since the beginning of April. Subsequently, HNLMS Groningen took over the duties of the Caribbean station ship from HNLMS Holland. The patrol ship is not only used for drug counter-operations. HNLMS Groningen also supports the Caribbean Coast Guard in humanitarian operations.
