Tegucigalpa – The 25-day deadline set by President Xiomara Castro to destroy the drug highway between Olancho and La Mosquitia has not been met, but the highway remains operational.
Faced with questions about the violations, the director of the Forest Protection Institute (ICF), Luis Solíz, passed the buck to the Attorney General’s Office, noting that the designation was made by the National Defense and Security Council within the framework of the National Security Law, which declared a state of environmental emergency on May 21.
Public Ministry spokesman Yuri Mora explained that before continuing with the destruction of the road, it is necessary to ensure that there will be no impact on the archaeological heritage, indigenous peoples and the country’s environment. Mora said that once these studies are completed, a final decision will be made.
Rene Soto, a representative of the Environmental Alliance, condemned the environmental damage caused by the highway, saying that more than 16,000 hectares of forest had been destroyed. “Honduras has lost the most important genetic information repository after the Amazon,” Soto lamented. “It is necessary to investigate what happened in the region and who has taken away the natural wealth of our country,” he concluded. pound
