Berlin – The Green Vault museum in Dresden, the eastern German exhibition center, which exhibits what is considered the largest collection of jewels in Europe, closed the chapter on the theft that occurred in 2019 when it began to display the treasures on Wednesday. The theft will resume in December 2022.
The Dresden State Art Collections confirmed to EFE that the jewellery exhibition was reopened, as previously announced by Marion Ackermann, director of the museum in the Saxon capital.
In a statement on Tuesday, Ackermann celebrated that the “Green Vault” will display to the public for the first time the jewels stolen in 2019, when the theft was worth 113 million euros.
“The pieces that were returned were great examples of 18th-century Saxon and international jewellery,” the curator recalled, referring to the recovered collection, which, she said, showed little visible damage and among which there were still some pieces to be salvaged, including the charreta’s well-known “White Saxon” diamond, weighing 50 carats.
“The reinstallation now allows Saxony citizens and all interested visitors to once again see the ‘Green Vault’ in almost all its splendor,” Ackermann said, thanking authorities for their “tireless” work in recovering the jewels.

The head of the Dresden museum said that while the losses caused by the theft could not be avoided, they could be prevented from happening again, so an exhaustive review of the security systems of the collections and property was carried out, adding that the usual coordination with the authorities was in place.
The head of the Dresden State Art Collections said some of the newly exhibited works had damage that required restoration, but that work had not yet begun because the court handling the case could still commission expert opinions.
