NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On Thursday, May 26, 2022, Dr. Rodney Smith, in his capacity as President and CEO of the University of the Bahamas, presented the final degrees to the Class of 2022 during the Spring Commencement Ceremony held at the Atlantis Conference Center.
Dr. Smith, whose term will end on July 31, 2022, expressed his gratitude to his administrative colleagues, campus staff, faculty, and alumni who will be accompanying him.
“It was no accident that I served as president of the College of the Bahamas and then as the first president of the University of the Bahamas. I was destined to fulfill my God-given mission here,” said Dr. Smith.

“I am incredibly proud of the achievements of the University during my leadership. I am especially proud of the faculty, staff, student leaders, unions and administrators who have worked with me to build the foundation of a strong national university or College of the Bahamas.
“The task we were tasked with was not an easy one, but with passion, determination and a shared belief in creating the best institution of higher education for the country, we persevered. Today, we have a university with some of the best faculty in the world and a commitment to national and international accreditation.”
He encouraged the Class of 2022 to be grateful for every experience they have.

“Each of them teaches you a valuable lesson. That lesson is part of your preparation on the journey to your ultimate divine destination,” he said.
“The world is changing, and each of you is part of that change. I invite you to take the next step with an open heart. You are ready to continue this magnificent journey called life and being human. Because you are ready, know that you are also enthusiastic about the possibility of taking an important step to help create a better world.
“You will ask questions that your professors have never thought of. You will create solutions to many unknown challenges. Challenges that we have not yet experienced, or even that we are experiencing together, such as climate change. This new world of progress, technology, and artificial BroadCast Unitedligence will force you to embrace the concept of lifelong learning.

“What has taken root in you, what has pushed you to study hard over the years, to get through stressful moments, to persevere no matter what, to get you closer to achieving your ultimate goal?”
Additionally, Dr. Smith implored the graduates to make a habit of reading the Book of Proverbs daily.
“You will find strength and encouragement in these readings as you journey through life.
“Stand tall, hold your heads high, and keep moving forward, upward, and onward, always making sure we stand united as Bahamians and proud Mingoans.”
