Dr. Ponsara Amarasinghe, a senior lecturer in international affairs at the National Defense University of Kotarawa, announced through public media that four Sri Lankan suspects recently arrested in Ahmedabad have been included in the list of suspects involved in the 2019 Easter attacks and are undergoing rehabilitation. The four suspects involved in the case were arrested yesterday (28) evening.

Dr. Amarasinghe revealed in an interview with popular TV channel Hiru TV that four Sri Lankan IS (Islamic State) suspects who were recently arrested in Ahmedabad, India, have been included in the 2019 rehabilitation list.

Dr. Amarasinghe was summoned to the Criminal Investigation Department for questioning regarding his statement on Hiru TV news show. According to local investigations, the authorities decided to arrest Dr. Ponsara Amarasinghe after questioning him about his statement, while observing that the four were not on the list of suspects to be rehabilitated in the Easter attacks.

Dr Amarasinghe was due to appear in court yesterday (28th) on charges of publicly expressing unsubstantiated ideas questioning national security.

Dr Amarasinghe’s speech focused on the broader issue of rehabilitation of persons involved in terrorist and extremist activities.

The entire recovery process has been brought to the attention of Sri Lankan and Indian authorities amid allegations that the four suspects arrested in Ahmedabad have links with the Islamic State group.

In this context, Dr. Amarasinghe’s revelations about their rehabilitation raise major questions about the effectiveness and transparency of Sri Lanka’s rehabilitation program.
