Kolkata (West Bengal[India]August 2 (ANI): Downtown Heroes’ Liberian striker Darius Snowdon Purwood scored two goals in Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangam (VYBK)’s match against Indian Air Force Football Team (IAFFT), enough to give the Srinagar-based club a historic first win in the Durand Cup.
In last year’s debut, Purwood lost all three games. In the second game between the two teams, Purwood scored in both halves to earn the Heroes three vital points in the current Durand Cup. Air Force lost both games in the group stage.
Kashmir will play Emami East Bengal FC at the city’s second stadium, Kishore Bharati Krirangan, on August 7, while Air Force will play its final group match against another local powerhouse, Mohun Bagan Supergiants, at the same VYBK a day later.
Heroes head coach Hilal Rasool Parray went with the same 3-5-2 formation as in the first match against Mohun Bagan Supergiants but made at least three changes to the 11 players. Air Force coach Priya Darshan, on the other hand, made as many as five changes to the squad that lost in the first match against Emami East Bengal FC.
The Heroes had the upper hand in the first half and won in the 29th minute when striker Perwood dribbled the ball from the left side straight into the box and Aafreen Parray found the ball with pinpoint accuracy and the Liberian player fired the ball accurately into the goal of Dinesh in the Air Force goal.
Mohammed Inam played a long pass from inside his own half and found an open Aafreen, who did an excellent job of controlling and distributing the ball in midfield.
Most of the second half was played in pouring rain and despite the Air Force soldiers being more aggressive, Heroes goalkeeper Umaid was barely disturbed throughout the match.
Pewood sealed the victory for the Heroes with his second shot in the 84th minute. He latched onto a cross from a space in the box. He controlled it well, evaded a defender and fired home with the confidence of a striker facing the goalkeeper. (ANI)
