The Netherlands doubled its Olympic gold medal tally on Friday with a win in sailing and a third rowing gold.
In Marseille, Odile van Aanholt and Annette Duetz took top prize in the 49erFX dinghy race, but the race almost ended in tragedy when the Dutch duo thought they had crossed the finish line.
The Swedish team crossed the finish line first, followed by the Italian team, but when the points were counted 10 minutes later, Van Aanholt and Duitz led the Swedish team by two points and won the championship.
In rowing, Imkye Clavering and Veronique Meester won gold in the coxless pairs, four seconds ahead of Romania and Australia.
The Netherlands now has three gold medals and two silver medals in rowing, winning the women’s four-man sculls gold on Thursday and the men’s four-man sculls gold on Wednesday.
track and field
Track and field events are slowly getting underway now, with Dutch medal hopeful Sifan Hassan set to make his debut on Friday in the first 5,000m heat after 6pm.
Hassan, who won gold in two sprint events at the Tokyo Olympics, chose to compete in three events at this Games – 5,000m, 10,000m and marathon.
