Despite all the adversities in her life, Asena Naiwase still faced the difficulties with courage.
Karabu, a single mother from Deletokatoka, never gave up hope. She worked hard to find opportunities to support her three children.
Today, her three children are grown up and have their own jobs and families.
But the 60-year-old shows no signs of slowing down.
She can still be seen selling perfume and handmade jewellery on the streets of Suva.
Creating beautiful pieces with her hands started out as a hobby, but when she discovered that she was pretty good at it, she never looked back and decided to turn her hobby into a source of income.
“I started doing this five years ago,” Arsena said.
“Besides meeting people, helping those in need and baking, this is one of my favorite hobbies right now.”
“Before this, I sold vegetables. But my young daughter encouraged me to do this. She even taught me how to make earrings and necklaces.”
To perfect her jewelry-making skills, she studied under the guidance of her daughter, who developed her skills through DIY (Do It Yourself) videos on social media.
“My daughter is online a lot and she has learned a lot of skills from YouTube. She will teach me after watching it.
“It’s a lot of fun and I love doing it.”
Asena started out selling perfumes and gradually moved on to selling arts and crafts.
“My son-in-law went to Iraq and came back with some perfume. I bought it from him and started selling it here (in Suva).
“Then customers started asking about handmade earrings and necklaces, so I thought of selling them as well.
“With the help of my daughter, I started making and selling handmade jewellery. I bought the raw materials and made the jewellery myself.”
Ms. Naivasay said she enjoys her job because it allows her to be financially capable and gives her the opportunity to meet different people every day.
“I meet new people and customers every day and make lots of friends.
“This job is less stressful. I can come and go whenever I want because there’s no one bossing me around.”
Her advice to single mothers is to find ways to succeed.
“Staying home doesn’t help. Try to do something so you’re not a burden to anyone. You have to get out there and find ways to be successful.
