One of the UK’s most prominent telecoms companies has advised parents not to buy smartphones for children under 11 in a bid to “protect children in the digital world”.

Children under 11 years of age should not have mobile phones that can access the internet and social networks, but rather devices with limited capacity through which they can only send text messages and make calls.

The company also called for limiting access to social networks for children under 13.

She stressed the need for parents to install controls on their children’s phones to monitor how much time they spend in front of screens and set time limits for specific apps.

It also calls for the activation of parental control tools before the age of 16, which in particular allow managing access to websites and avoiding inappropriate content.
