The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Saad Abubakar III, has admonished the Nigerian Army to avoid tribalism or religious divisions in their operations.

The chairman of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs stressed that such negative tendencies could cause division in the army and the country as a whole.

Sultan made the announcement during the commissioning ceremony of the newly built Nigerian Army Armoured Corps Headquarters Building and the reunion and retirement parade of retired senior armoured officers in Bauchi State on Wednesday.

He said: “You are in the army now and a lot of questions revolve around where you are from, who is a Muslim, who is a Christian, who is a Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba. Many years ago we never knew these things.

“Please don’t let this kind of thing infiltrate the military because it will divide us and this country.”

The monarch also warned citizens not to defame military personnel involved in various operations to restore peace in the country.

“Nigerians need to help the army and pray for them because without security, we cannot even sleep, work or even go to worship centres,” he said.
