Donald Trump struggles to define Kamala Harris for swing state voters

While Trump’s often incendiary rallies have provided a “feast” for TV networks, Navarro said, “Trump doesn’t need a feast now. He needs votes, and the current rally format simply doesn’t focus enough on the very stark policy differences between him and Kamala Harris, which will affect voters in key battleground states.”

David Urban, a former Trump adviser and current political strategist at the BRG Group, urged Republican candidates to attack Harris for wanting to weaken gun ownership, push for a single-payer health care system and ban fracking (a stance she later reversed because fracking is unpopular in Pennsylvania).

“Talk about the problems. If we blame them on personalities or crowd sizes, we’re going to lose, and you can see it in the polls,” he said.

The call comes after a new poll was released over the weekend. Financial Times A study by the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business found that 42% of voters said they trust the vice president to handle the economy, while 41% said the previous president would do a better job.

The result represents a 7-point gain for Democrats since the last survey in July, when President Joe Biden was the nominee, and is the first time in nearly a year that the party has an advantage on economic issues over Republicans, who have traditionally been seen as better managers of the economy.

Harris, who will begin laying out her economic platform later this week, unveiled her first campaign promise on the issue at a rally in Nevada, where she angered Trump by taking on his policy of not taxing tips from restaurant workers — an issue that is of particular concern to many in and around Las Vegas.

Despite Trump calling her a “Kamala copycat,” the culinary union said the vice president has been supportive of hospitality workers.

“She stood by us as we negotiated and won the best union contract ever, and we are confident she will continue to drive progress and real results under the Biden-Harris Administration that prioritize and protect working families,” said Ted Pappageorge, the union’s secretary-treasurer.

Election Day is still three months away, but the latest polls show just how much Biden’s decision to end his reelection bid and endorse Harris has upended the race.

But Trump has struggled to form a coherent strategy against Harris since Biden left office, sparking concerns within the party that time is running out to determine her place among undecided voters.

In an effort to rebuild his momentum following his near-assassination attempt — and at a time when the Republican National Convention was more united than ever — Trump on Monday returned to the former Twitter social media platform, now known as X, for the first time since last August.

This is the second time since January 8, 2021 that his account has been suspended over concerns that it could incite violence following the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The Trump campaign also spent $37.2 million in new ad spending in seven battleground states, the most the Trump campaign has ever spent on TV ads in a single day this election cycle, according to tracking firm AdImpact.

Much of that money — nearly $24 million — will be spent in Georgia alone, a sign of how hard Republicans are working to wrestle back the Deep South from Democrats.
