Abdul Imraz never imagined that he would one day become a barber.
The 23-year-old, who hails from Visama, a few kilometres outside Nausori town, dreamed of a career in Information Technology (IT) since her childhood.
However, as fate would have it, he chose a job that focused on tapping into his innate creativity.
After completing his primary education at Makoyi Muslim Primary School and secondary education at Nasinu Muslim College, Imraz vaguely realized that he could not continue his IT studies.
Like many of his peers, he had a hard time considering a career and soon tried his hand in hairdressing.
He discovered that he had a creative and artistic talent.
That, coupled with his friendly and bubbly personality, led to him landing a job at Super Fade Cut on Victoria Avenue in Suva.
“I love my job,” Imraz said.
“My childhood dream was to work in IT, but due to some issues, I could not further my studies in this field and fulfill my dream.
“My second interest is barbering and salon services. So, when I couldn’t do IT, I decided to join this field. I was interested in barbering and learned how to cut various hairstyles.
“I knew I could be successful in this field, so I wasted no time and started learning barbering skills immediately after graduation.”
Imraz found a job in a small barbershop in Nausori and used the time to learn barbering knowledge and hone his hairdressing skills. Although he has found a better job, he is still grateful to his first employer for his training and guidance.
“I am grateful to my former boss at Wananavu Barber Shop in Nausori who provided me with the opportunity to learn barbering skills,” he said.
“When I started doing hair, I had no idea how to cut. I didn’t know anything. But now, I can do whatever hair the customer likes.
The decision to move to a shop in Suva was driven by the need to work somewhere that offered modern and professional barbering services, had a relaxing atmosphere, used quality products and provided a good learning experience.
He found those opportunities with Super Fade Cut, and he hasn’t looked back since joining.
“I’ve learned so much over the past four years that I don’t think I need to work anywhere else right now.
“I put my heart and soul into my current job and enjoy every moment of it.”
But Imraz’s life was not “all work and no play.” To escape the stress and physical challenges of work, he sought solace and peace in some leisure activities. He realized that hobbies can improve mood, increase resilience, and enhance skills and self-awareness.
“Besides haircutting, my hobbies are playing football, doing sports and watching movies.”
Imraz likes to work hard and believes in the value of passion, determination and diligence. He says young people should get an education, but if they fail, they should use their talents and do something they love.
“My advice to young people who have just graduated is to not lose hope!”
“You can do great things you never dreamed of, but you should first be willing to learn and put in the time into the work you do.”
