Suriname is in the process of applying for certification as a malaria-free country. However, imported cases from neighboring countries remain the main threat to Suriname. Minister of Health Amal Ramadhin, together with experts including Stephen Frieden of the Malaria Elimination Task Force, held a meeting with the Pan American Health Organization on this matter. During this discussion, strategies and action plans were developed to accelerate malaria elimination and assess the current situation in each country.
The meeting also aims to discuss strategies and set timelines for collaboration between neighboring French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana and the northern states of Brazil. Through these joint efforts, the countries involved hope not only to eliminate malaria but also to lay a solid foundation for further regional health initiatives, the public health report said.
Cooperation between neighbouring countries highlights shared responsibility and the need for joint action to address health challenges and ensure a healthier future for the region.
In the coming period, technical experts from various countries will meet to discuss the current situation and develop a strategy for malaria elimination. The aim is to hold a ministerial meeting after the results of this technical meeting to further refine and adjust the plan. The Pan American Health Organization will play an intermediary role to promote cooperation and exchanges between countries.
