Syria’s High Committee for the Implementation of the 2018 Peace Agreement and Roadmap announced that a resolution on inter-party dialogue will be signed next Monday.
Minister of Cabinet Affairs and committee member Dr. Martin Elia Lomulo told reporters after the committee meeting in Juba on Friday that they had reviewed the implementation of the agreement and outstanding tasks and would make a decision on the status of the agreement and elections on Monday.
“The High-Level Standing Committee on the Implementation of the Agreement and Roadmap reviewed and agreed this morning to Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. We reviewed many activities, clauses and sub-clauses that have been completed, are ongoing and have yet to be completed,” Dr. Lomulo said.
“We have agreed to put the documents together and meet on Monday afternoon so that all parties can complete the discussion and find a way forward. I hope that by Monday we will have signed the complete document and will then submit it to the President so that a meeting of chairpersons can be convened,” he noted.
Peace has officially returned to South Sudan since a 2018 agreement ended a five-year conflict that killed hundreds of thousands of people.
The election was scheduled for last year It has been postponed to December this year, but preparations are not yet in place.
The feasibility of holding elections in December 2024 – the country’s first since independence in July 2011 – is increasingly in doubt.
With only six months until the elections, political parties need to be clear on how they plan to expedite and complete key outstanding tasks in order to hold free, fair and credible elections in December.
The original transition period agreed in the 2018 peace agreement ended on February 22, 2023, and the extended transition period is expected to end on February 22, 2025.
