Dialogue and clarification between the Magistrates’ Union and the National Police

Following a statement issued on June 24, 2024 by the National Executive Office of the Autonomous Union of Magistrates of Niger (BEN SAMAN), the National Directorate General of Police (DGPN) issued an official response on June 27, 2024. In this statement, BEN SAMAN expressed concerns about the actions and behavior of certain members of the National Police, thus triggering a response from the DGPN to clarify and ease tensions.

The National Police reiterated its unwavering commitment to respecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of all citizens, including magistrates. The DGPN insisted that all its actions strictly adhere to legality and human rights and stressed that the protection of fundamental rights remains an absolute priority.
Professionalism and ethics

The DGPN recalled that its agents are trained to act with exemplary professionalism and in accordance with the strictest ethical standards. Management has ensured that any allegations of violation of these principles are rigorously investigated and appropriate sanctions are imposed where appropriate. This approach is aimed at guaranteeing public confidence in the police institution.

The DGPN advocated for a constructive dialogue, expressing its wish to work closely with all state institutions, including the judiciary, to ensure safety and justice for all. The National Police said they were open to any discussion aimed at improving relations and working conditions between the different stakeholders.
Ongoing investigation

In response to the specific incidents mentioned by BEN SAMAN, the DGPN said that investigations are currently underway to shed light on these incidents. The National Police is committed to communicating the results of these investigations with full transparency and taking the necessary measures based on the conclusions reached.

The DGPN called on all stakeholders to remain calm and take responsibility to avoid escalating tensions. She reiterated her desire to work in harmony with BEN SAMAN and all other partners for the benefit of the people of Niger.

The National Police Commander thanked BEN SAMAN for his commitment to improving justice in Niger and expressed the hope that this press release will help allay concerns while strengthening mutual trust between different national institutions.
