The DGPC and India’s Adani Group on Sunday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the construction of the Wangchuck hydropower project.
An official of DGPC said that this was an expression of interest by DGPC and Adani Group has agreed to build the downstream project of Tala project.
“There are two options to take the project forward: either a 570MW run-of-river power generation option or a 900MW reservoir power generation option,” a DGPC official said.
Detailed project reports for both the options have been prepared and the two sides will discuss the technical and cost parameters.
The official said the choice would be made based on the benefits of either run-of-river or reservoir-based power generation options.
The official also said the two sides agreed to work closely together to understand the project parameters and will discuss whether to select a joint venture and implementation plan.
“It will take us three to five months to complete the project,” the official said.
The official said the DGPC chose the Wangchu project as there are several hydropower projects currently underway. He added that other projects will be explored for such collaboration in the future.
Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, announced at X that the DGPC has signed a memorandum of understanding to build a 570 MW green hydropower plant in Chukha. “It is admirable to see the Prime Minister of Bhutan taking forward the vision of His Majesty the King and pursuing a wide-ranging infrastructure program across the country.”
He also expressed his expectation to work closely with Bhutan in hydropower and other infrastructure development.
The Bhutanese government will continue to maintain close cooperation with the Indian government in the fields of hydropower and solar energy, and this project is also a model of cooperation between the two countries.
According to reports, the DGPC is in talks with the Tata Group to build the 600MW Kholongchhu hydropower project.
