A thorough investigation by the Fiji Correctional Services (FCS) found that prison officers and their families had been receiving free meals and groceries from Grace Road businesses in and around the Suva area.
The investigation was launched following reports that some police officers accepted favours from detained Grace Road director Daniel Kim, who is currently being held at the Suva Detention Centre on immigration orders.
In total, 11 police officers were identified as being involved in these activities.
Fiji Correctional Services Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa said such actions were in direct violation of the ethical standards and regulations governing the conduct of Fiji Correctional Services officers.
“The integrity and professionalism of our officers is vital to the operation of the Fiji Correctional Service.”
“Based on the findings of the investigation, FCS took immediate and decisive action.”
“These officers will be disciplined in accordance with Fiji Correctional Services policies and procedures.”
“We will not tolerate any form of misconduct or unethical behavior. The actions of a few should not overshadow the hard work and dedication of the majority of our employees who perform their duties with the highest integrity.”
He said the FCS remains committed to upholding the law and ensuring all officers adhere to the highest standards of conduct.
“We are taking steps to prevent this type of incident from happening again and are stressing the importance of ethical behavior by all personnel.”
Dr Nakarawa assured the public that the FCS will continue to operate in a transparent and accountable manner. Further details of the disciplinary process will be managed internally, respecting the privacy and rights of all involved.
