The Department of Pacific Peoples said it would continue to support and fund Pacific Island Languages Week in New Zealand.

This was in response to queries about an email seen by RNZ Pacific sent by the ministry to Pacific community leaders regarding the reorganisation and disbanding of the language unit.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Education confirmed that 14 positions in the former Pacific Languages Council had been eliminated, but said language work would continue through other restructured positions.

These include three posts on the Policy and Insight Directorate and 24 posts on the Commissioning and Partnership Directorate.

It is unclear how the reorganisation will affect planning and preparation for the eleven Pacific Language Weeks on the Department of Foreign Affairs calendar.

According to the Public Service Association, 57 positions have been eliminated at the Department of Pacific Peoples as a result of government cuts.
