The Minister of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs has expressed disappointment over the remarks made by the Leader of the Opposition, Lawyer Ousainou NMO Darboe, during a press conference of the United Democratic Party (UDP) on June 3, 2024, regarding the allocation of a piece of land in Fajara, Atlantic Road to His Excellency President Adama Barrow.
The Minister reminded Mr. Dabo that the mandate of the Ministry of Land Distribution is for all Gambians, including the President. It is noteworthy that Mr. Dabo himself also benefited from land distribution during the Jawara government. More recently, during the current government, Mr. Dabo’s immediate family also benefited from land distribution when he was first the Minister of Foreign Affairs and later the Vice President. Therefore, Mr. Dabo’s remarks were made with malicious intent and were intended to stir up controversy and discontent among the people.
Regarding the land allocated to President Barrow, the Ministry of Lands stressed that the land had not been occupied by any institution, including the Chief Justice, for many years. Therefore, the Ministry of Lands retains and exercises its power to reallocate land as it sees fit. In this case, the Ministry of Lands exercised its statutory powers to allocate it to the current Head of State, President Adama Barrow. The Minister assured the public that the remarks made by Attorney Dabo were false and seemed intended only to score cheap political points and embarrass President Barrow.
The Ministry remains committed to transparent and fair land distribution practices for all Gambians and urged the public to disregard attempts by lawyer Ousainou Darboe to politicise the process.
