DEOTHANG — Residents of Samdrupjongkhar Deothang have witnessed an increase in population over the years, prompting them to advocate for a community police station in their town.
They said setting up of a Gewog Gagdey police station in Deothang was necessary in view of its distance of 18 km from Sandrudzongkar Dzongkar district and its location on Sandrudzongkar-Tashigaon highway.
“If we set up community policing stations, people can get responses faster and it will help reduce the crime rate in the area,” said Jamyang resident.
He said there were no cases of burglary, assault or domestic violence in the town and village, but they did not feel safe. “Since there is no community police station, the police have to come all the way to Deotang to solve the problem, which takes about 20 minutes to drive from Samdrudzongkar.”
Another resident, Sonam Dorjee, said among the many challenges, safety is the biggest concern for their community. “The establishment of a community police station will help maintain peace and tranquility in the community and families.”
He said incidents of crime are likely to increase with the increase in the number of school dropouts, Jigmenamyeer Engineering College students and university graduates in the town. “Also, there is a constant flow of tourists to the town.”
The mother of three said there is a stark difference between having a community police force and not having one.
“Although our crime rate is not high, the presence of police in the community will help curb crime and make people obey laws and rules,” she said, adding that many cases go unreported because people cannot easily seek help from the police.
A business owner who wished to remain anonymous said the opening of the police station would make them feel confident and safe. “Without the police station, drunk people would shout and make trouble at night,” she said. “Also, some drivers drive recklessly, which increases the risk of accidents.”
She added that walking at night was also unsafe for women and children. “Women and girls feel safe when police are present.”
Residents demanded a police station not because of the high crime rate in the community, but because the presence of police makes people aware of the law. They believe that with the presence of police, the community will understand the rule of law. “We can rely on them when we encounter problems, and we feel safe,” said one resident.
To bring police services closer to the community, the Royal Bhutan Police (RBP) needs to consider factors such as distance, population size and past crime rates recorded by the police.
It is reported that the Royal Bhutan Police had planned to set up a community police station in Deo Thang, but failed to do so due to lack of space.
