– NATO is a defensive alliance. Deterrence and defense are one of NATO’s core tasks and are necessary in view of Russia’s aggressiveness, the Danish Ministry of Defense wrote in a statement to the Danish news agency Ritzau.

– Exercises are an important part of continuous deterrence. The ministry further wrote that Denmark does not deploy medium-range missiles.

Putin said at a meeting with Russia’s National Security Council on Friday that Russia should resume production of short- and medium-range missiles, which were banned under a now-expired disarmament agreement with the United States known as the Intermediate-Range Missile Treaty.

During the meeting, Putin also claimed that the United States had sent medium-range missiles to Denmark for military exercises.

Short- and medium-range missiles were the subject of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Missile Treaty, in which the Soviet Union and the United States agreed that Europe should not be equipped with nuclear missiles. The agreement expired in August 2019, and then-President Donald Trump shelved it on February 1 of that year. Russia did the same the next day.
