At least 24 people have died and dozens are missing after a boat capsized on a river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
The accident occurred on Sunday evening when a motorboat carrying 250-300 passengers capsized after hitting a tree trunk in the waters of Lukni River in Maidobe Province (West).
A local official told Reuters that there was a sudden shift in weight on the boat when “panicked passengers moved to one side, causing the vessel to capsize.”
Fidel Lizolingo, civil society chief in Maidobe province, said at least 43 people on board survived but the fate of many others was unknown, adding that angry relatives of the victims lynched the boat operator.
Barges are often used to ferry people across rivers and lakes in this large central African country, but they are often overloaded, making sinkings particularly serious.
