In Ethiopia, the death toll from two landslides in southern East Africa rose on Sunday and Monday.
Ethiopian government officials said the number of bodies pulled out of the mud has exceeded 229, and dozens more are feared to be buried in the mud.
Kassahun Abayneh, spokesman for the government in Ethiopia’s southern Gofa region, told Reuters that heavy rains on Sunday triggered landslides that caused the damage.
Marcos Melese, head of the state disaster management agency in Gorfa, told Reuters they were still searching for bodies and did not know when rescue operations would stop.
People rescuing landslide victims lost their strength on Monday after they were trapped in a second landslide.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed deep sorrow over the heavy casualties and said federal officials had been sent to the scene to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
