Police began operations on Thursday morning to clear existing roadblocks in the area.
Noumea prosecutor Yves Dupas said the incident took place on Thursday when French gendarmes were dealing with a group of thugs who had set up gunfire at a roadblock on the bridge leading to Thiaw.
Dupas said in a news release that one of the two wounded gunmen was shot in the head on the way to Noumea General Hospital and was pronounced dead.
The death toll from the violent unrest that began on May 13, 2023 has now risen to 11, including nine civilians and two gendarmes.
