Bougainville President Ismail Toroama says the death of MP Father Simon Dumarinu is a great loss to the region.
The Central Bougainville member of Papua New Guinea’s national parliament died last Friday.
Mr Toroama said the Catholic priest was an outstanding spiritual leader in the Bougainville community and a leader who was committed to his people and his faith throughout his political career.
Toroama described him as a great man who not only understood his people but also shared their struggles and triumphs with them.
“I salute Father Simon for his service to our people and for spreading the Word of God during the Bougainville crisis. He used his role as a priest to provide comfort, inspiration and spiritual guidance to our people and leaders during this difficult time,” the President said.
He said, “Two months ago, Prime Minister James Marape, myself and the late Father Simon launched the ‘Five-Year Development Plan for Central Bougainville’, which was a major initiative by him to pave the way for future development through empowering service delivery”.
“I am really sad that he passed away just as he was about to implement his plans to develop Central Bougainville.”
