NEW YORK (AP) — After 10 days in theaters, “Deadpool vs. Wolverine” has become the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history (not accounting for inflation).
The Marvel Studios blockbuster starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman continued to take over North American theaters in its second weekend, taking in $97 million, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
That brings the film’s two-week total to $395.6 million, surpassing the long-time R-rated reign of “The Passion of the Christ,” which held the record for 20 years with $370 million domestically.
The Shawn Levy-directed film has grossed $824.1 million worldwide, surpassing the global revenue of the first two Deadpool films, which grossed $782.6 million worldwide in 2016 and $734.5 million in the 2018 sequel.
For its part, M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller, “Entrapment,” which stars Josh Hartnett as a serial killer pursued by police at a pop concert, opened with $15.6 million at 3,181 theaters for Warner Bros.
Hollywood closed out July with its best month of the year, and the first $1 billion month since July 2023. While not a great comparison to last year (July was the year of the releases of Barbie and Oppenheimer), the releases of The Walt Disney Company’s Inside Out 2 and Deadpool vs. Wolverine (two of the biggest films of the year) led to a stellar performance for the industry.
