Morning Star Academy won the championship in a mathematics competition held at Union High School in Bor town, Jonglei State on Friday.
The purpose of the competition is to improve students’ math skills and prepare them for college.
Michael Makuei Ghai, a mathematics teacher and acting academic dean at Alliance High School, who is the main organizer of the competition, told Radio Tamazuj that the competition is aimed at motivating students and preparing them for the important role of mathematics in higher education.
“Day Star Academy performed well in both categories,” Makuei said.
“We have set up a junior group for Form 3 students and a senior group for Form 4 students. Daystar School achieved the highest score in both groups. However, it is worth noting that the overall performance was not satisfactory, with no school having an average score of more than 50 per cent.”
In the senior category, Jacob Leek Ajak from Day Star scored the highest with 6 out of 10, followed by Clinton Bior Buol from Alliance High with 3 out of 10. In the junior category, Thiak Kuot Thiak from Day Star led with 4 out of 10, while Nikodemus Abuk Yuang from Amazing Grace High scored 3 out of 10.
Makuei stressed the importance of mathematics in students’ educational paths. “Mathematics is an important subject that students must master to succeed in higher education. This competition is held to increase appreciation for mathematics and address the overall poor performance of this subject nationwide,” he said.
The participating teams in this competition are Alliance High School (the organizer), Amazing Grace High School, Day Star Academy and Spotlight High School.
Jacob Nyal Adek, principal of Amazing Grace High School, stressed the role that the competition plays in reshaping students’ attitudes towards mathematics.
“Such competitions are crucial to change students’ negative perceptions about computing subjects and help them prepare for national examinations,” Nial said.
He further addressed the common belief that mathematics is inherently difficult, which he believes contributes to students’ poor performance.
“Students often think that mathematics is a difficult subject, which causes them to put in less effort. This negative perception is the reason why many students do poorly in mathematics in their examinations. I encourage students to overcome these thoughts, devote themselves to their studies, and actively engage with their teachers and textbooks,” added Neil. Jonglei State, where Bor is located, is known for its academic excellence. In the 2021/2022 national secondary school examinations, seven of the top 10 students were from Jonglei State.
