Hamas said in a statement that Israel’s claim that the attack targeted Qassam Brigades commander-in-chief Mohammad Dave was “baseless.”
Palestinian resistance movement Hamas on Saturday denied Israeli media claims that the head of the Qassam Brigades was targeted in an Israeli airstrike that targeted tents of displaced Palestinians in the southern Gaza Strip, killing more than 70 people and injuring nearly 300.
Hamas said in a statement that Israel’s claim that the attack targeted Qassam Brigades commander-in-chief Mohammad Dave was “baseless.”
The statement also said that the Israeli media’s accusations “are intended to cover up the scale of the horrific massacres committed by the Israeli occupiers.”
The statement also noted: “The Mawasi Khan Yunis massacre targeted an area crowded with more than 80,000 displaced persons, which clearly shows that the Zionist government continues to carry out genocide against our Palestinian people through repeated and systematic targeting of unarmed civilians.”
After the attack, the Israeli daily Today claimed, without providing any evidence, that the main goal of the airstrike was to eliminate Mohammad Dave.
The statement added: “It is estimated that there is a high probability that Div was injured in the attack, but military officials are awaiting the results.”
At the same time, the Israeli military radio station also claimed that the attack targeted “important figures” of Hamas, but the outcome is still unknown.

Rescue teams were still working to recover bodies from the blast site and help the wounded, the office said in a statement, noting that hospitals were overwhelmed and unable to accommodate the large number of injured when the massacre occurred.
An official at Nasser Hospital told Al Jazeera that the hospital had received more than 20 bodies and a large number of injured people, confirming that the hospital was unable to accept more patients.
The Israeli army had previously classified the target areas as “safe” and instructed the displaced to seek shelter there.
