Bishop Philippe Rukamba, the retired bishop of the Diocese of Butare, announced on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, that on October 5, 2024, Bishop Jean Bosco Ntagungira, who was elected to lead the Diocese of Butare, will receive the staff of the pastoral leadership of the diocese.
Bishop Rukamba made the announcement at the closing of a seminar on healing trauma and building lasting unity, reconciliation and integrity, organized by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference through its Justice and Peace Commission.
On August 12, 2024, the Vatican announced that Archpriest Ntagongila Jean Bosco of the Diocese of Regina Pacis in Remera would succeed Bishop Philippe Rukamba, who was in charge of the diocese and was about to retire.
“His Holiness the Grand Chancellor Emeritus Pope Francis has accepted the ordination of Bishop Filippo Rukamba of the Diocese of Butare in Rwanda. Pope Francis has also chosen Fr Jean Bosco Ntagongira, Prelate of the Diocese of Remera, as Bishop of Butare,” the announcement said.
Bishop Ntagongira Jean Bosco, who was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Butare, has been replaced by Father Pascal Tuyisenge, rector of the Ndela Seminary, as head of the Regina Pasis diocese.
Father Ntagongira Jean Bosco becomes the third bishop of the Diocese of Butare, led by Bishop Philippe Rukamba, replacing Bishop Jean Baptiste Gahamani.
