An investigation into a former Greens MP’s knowledge of allegations of worker exploitation has revealed her evidence changed during the inquiry and there were varying explanations as to why.
The review examined what Darleen Tana knew about allegations of underpayments and visa irregularities at her husband’s company, what she did about it and what steps she took to tell the Greens.
A leaked report from lawyer Rachel Burt also claimed that evidence given by Tana’s husband Christian Hoff-Neilsen often obfuscated rather than illuminated the truth.
During the investigation, further allegations came to light and the scope of the investigation was expanded to include those that Tana was aware of.
Burt said the investigation was complex and took longer than expected for a number of reasons.
The original two complainants initially did not want to meet with her, and many people with relevant information did not want to participate in the investigation.
She said that just as she was finalizing a draft report last month, a representative of one of the complainants decided to send her more than 500 pages of new information.
Burt said that as an independent investigator for the Green Party, she did not have any legal power to compel witnesses to speak to her or provide documents.
Therefore, she must rely on people’s willingness to participate.
