On Thursday, Bernard Villagomez, public information officer for the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and Yvonne Pangelinan, senior director of student support services for the public school system, announced the schedule for the full-scale exercise Konfitma 2024, which will be held on September 3 and 4. Konfitma is a Chamorro word that means “to proceed as planned.” Villagomez said in a news conference that the Konfitma exercise has a long history but was “on hold” due to social distancing regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The exercise resumed in 2023, and this year, the team is accelerating…working to ensure readiness,” he added. “The main goal of the Konfitma 2024 exercise is to test the ability of Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands agencies to respond to realistic situations. This includes collaboration with the 94th Civil Support Team of the Guam National Guard and the 54th Civil Support Team of the Wisconsin National Guard. The purpose of the exercise is to assess whether the capabilities of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are sufficient or whether federal and Department of Defense assistance will be needed in future emergencies,” Villagomez said.
