VIDEO: Hours after fire swept through a vacant building in North Seattle, killing one person, the City Council unanimously passed an ordinance aimed at preventing vacant buildings from becoming death traps. According to data from the Seattle Fire Department in 2021, city firefighters responded to 70 abandoned building fires. By 2023, that number had skyrocketed to 130. Before the vote, SFD dangerous buildings ordinance co-sponsor Tammy Morales commented on the deadly incident earlier in the day. “This couldn’t be more timely,” Morales said. Morales also noted that between 2022 and 2023, there were 60 vacant building fires in her district alone. “The potential for drug use or other illegal activity within a building could cause further structural damage, reduce community safety, and endanger our first responders,” Morales said.
