VIDEO: The Guam Fire Department has added two brand-new pumper trucks to its emergency response fleet, slightly improving emergency response times for about a third of the island’s population. The two new trucks were welcomed at a dedication ceremony in Adelup on Friday. One will be assigned to the Yona Fire Department and the other will work at the Dededo Fire Department. Acting Fire Chief Joey San Nicolas said the trucks were purchased with a grant of about $1 million from the Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs. “You’re looking at years and hours of hard work, dating back to 2019 … and then having COVID, which has stretched the manufacturing cycle for fire trucks nationwide to three years, and that’s where we are now,” he said. “The timing couldn’t be better.”
