As the representative of the 2nd District, Rep. Manny Castro (Ind.-Saipan) stressed the importance of certification, maintenance and training to reduce incidents like the Susupe Fire that occurred last weekend. Victims of the Susupe Fire said that while the fire spread quickly, there was an issue with the water needed to put it out. Specifically, the Saipan Tribune learned that efforts to put out the fire were delayed by a lack of access to water from nearby hydrants, as fire trucks coming in from the north had to wait a short time. Castro said during a joint public hearing last Wednesday that it is important to have departments like the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services be certified to ensure certain standards are met, such as proper equipment maintenance and adequate training.
