PHOTOS: The Guam hiking community, along with friends and family, are mourning the death of Reed Topasner, who died Saturday evening after falling into a 35-foot-deep hole while hiking in the Taina Mountain area of Santa Rita Sumai. Topasner had been an avid hiker for the past 30 years and was celebrating his “birthday hike” in the Taina Mountain area, according to his cousin and hiking partner, Ryan San Nicolas. “From what I understand, yesterday was also his birthday. He passed away, and it was like a birthday hike for him. From what I understand, he fell into a 35-foot-deep hole,” San Nicolas said. “It’s just so sad, all of the circumstances, how it happened, and it happened on his birthday. … When I got off the phone with his ex-wife, … I didn’t know the scope and severity of the situation, and the 35-foot-deep hole. I was like, ‘Reed’s going to come out.’ An hour later, I learned he passed away,” San Nicolas said.
