In a recent Q&A, Fire and EMS Firefighter Nipighiyong T. Laniyo was asked: What inspires you to be active in your community and what drives you to continue to make a difference? Laniyo responded, “Not only does my father still work in the fire department, but I also come from a family of female educators. Growing up, I had the opportunity to watch them teach and nurture their students to grow, serve and help the community, while having fun doing it. What drives me to continue to make a difference? To ensure that the next generation of leaders, public servants, and communities can live a prosperous life.” Second question: Can you share a particularly memorable experience or accomplishment? Laniyo responded, “The fire department is a predominantly male workforce. I feel like excelling in this career choice, like other female firefighters past and present, has paved the way for female firefighters…”
