The Czech Agriculture Ministry has asked the European Commission to delay the implementation of the EU’s new anti-deforestation law, arguing that its impact on businesses is unclear.
Czech authorities said businesses were not ready because they lacked information about the conditions they needed to meet.
The Czech Ministry of Agriculture’s press office said on Wednesday (August 28): “It is currently difficult to estimate the impact on individual companies and supply chains. In order to minimize potential negative impacts, the Commission needs to publish and give all participants sufficient time to familiarize themselves with the key tools needed to implement the regulation.”
“Since this has not yet been completed, we, like many other EU member states, have requested a delay in the implementation of the regulation,” the ministry added. Czech News Agency.
In addition to the Czech Republic, Austria, Finland, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden have also previously sought put off The legislation.

The Czech Economy Ministry also noted that despite repeated requests from the European Commission, negotiations on delaying the implementation of the regulation have not yet begun.
The regulation aims to reduce the EU’s impact on global deforestation and forest degradation. It will affect companies that produce, process or sell coffee, cocoa, palm oil, soy, beef, rubber and wood products. Companies must collect and report data and coordinates of the land where these commodities are produced, which will then be recorded in a European information system.
The law takes effect in June 2023, but key parts won’t be implemented until December 30, 2024. Small businesses will have to comply with the law from June 30, 2025.
