JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Cyril Ramaphosa was sworn in as South Africa’s president for a second term Wednesday in a ceremony in Pretoria, the country’s administrative capital.

Ramaphosa, whose African National Congress party lost its parliamentary majority in last month’s election, plans to appoint a new coalition government.

He was re-elected president by lawmakers last Friday with help from the main opposition party and a third party that joined the ANC coalition to run Africa’s most industrialized economy.

Ramaphosa was sworn in before Chief Justice Raymond Zondo at the Union Buildings, the seat of government.

The many guests and leaders attending the event included current and former heads of state and diplomats from across the continent, who witnessed the start of what Ramaphosa promised to be a tough last term. He will have to command the first coalition government executive in the country’s democratic history after his formation lost the dominant position it had held in the polls for the past 30 years. At least three parties will form what the ANC calls a national unity government, and more have been invited to join.

The event was attended by Swaziland’s King Mswati III; Nigerian President Bola Tinubu; Zimbabwe’s Emerson Mnangagwa and Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
