Dr. Elisavet Constantinou, Director of the Cyprus Health Services and Public Health Services, assured that there are enough vaccines at adult vaccination centers so that anyone who wishes can be vaccinated.
Speaking on KYPE, at a time of global alarm as monkeypox now also exists outside Africa, with the first cases having been detected in Europe and Asia, Ms Constantinou said there was no reason to worry, pointing out that Cyprus has treated five cases since the World Health Organization declared the same virus a Public Health Event of International Concern again in 2022.
According to Dr. Constantinou, incident management protocols are in place and being implemented, while he noted that Cyprus is capable of laboratory diagnosis, isolation, treatment and management of such incidents.
Contact your personal doctor or TAEP when you are sick
He added that if anyone develops symptoms and thinks they have contracted the disease, they should contact their personal doctor or the emergency department of the State Health Services Organization (OKYpY).
Furthermore, he mentioned that the Nicosia Adult General Hospital and Makarios Children’s Hospital have been designated as reference centers, noting that the protocols followed have been in effect since 2022.
When asked where the cases would be treated if necessary, Dr. Constantinou said if any incidents require hospitalization, it would be done at the Nicosia General Hospital Infectious Diseases Clinic.
However, he said some of these cases were mild to moderate, for which home quarantine is usually recommended.
When asked when people should get vaccinated, the director of medical services said the ministry recommends vaccination for people travelling to areas where the virus is prevalent, such as Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, etc.
Vaccination is also recommended for health professionals who treat such cases or those involved in the hospitalization and care of such cases or close contacts of cases (i.e. partners of people affected by the virus or people infected with the virus who live in the same house).
Furthermore, he stressed that it is recommended that immunosuppressed people also get the vaccine, but anyone else who wishes can get the vaccine.
symptom
Monkeypox, also known as monkeypox, is caused by a virus from the same family as pox but is usually much less harmful.
It was originally transmitted from animals to humans, but can now also be spread from person to person.
Initial symptoms include fever, headache, swelling, back pain and muscle aches. Once the fever subsides, a rash may appear.
The infection lasts 14 to 21 days.
WHO and ECDC are studying Clade 1 very carefully.
In response to relevant questions, Dr. Constantinou said that the reason why the World Health Organization is worried is that the number of cases in African countries has increased rapidly, both in terms of cases and deaths.
He explained that according to laboratory findings, the increase was due to a variant of the virus, called “clade 1”, adding that this variant is estimated to be more contagious than previously existing strains.
He added that the WHO and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) are at a stage where they are looking very carefully and collecting data on the behaviour of the virus.
The risk of illness is lower for those who will not travel
It is worth noting that the first case in Europe was discovered in Sweden yesterday, and the World Health Organization declared a monkeypox emergency.
However, yesterday evening the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control published a risk assessment and said the risk to citizens of European countries who do not plan to travel to those countries is “very low”.
The Covid 19 infection wave is receding
Furthermore, when asked about the number of Covid 19 cases, Mrs Constantinou said it was a “significant decrease” compared to the previous week.
As he said, the number of positive cases and hospitalizations have both decreased.
“It looks like we are in the retreat phase of the small waves,” Ms Constantinou concluded.
